Lab Method Teacher Training

Can I take the modules separately?
  • YES!  Module 1 is a foundational deep dive into all things yoga and is perfect for anyone interested in expanding their understanding and practice. After completing this module you can then choose if you feel called to continue onto the teacher’s path, and take Module 2.
Is this a hot training?

We do incorporate heated practices as part of the training but the full day is not spent in the heat!  Module 2 does cover the hows and whys of teaching in the heat, so you can understand it from a teacher’s perspective.

I don't want to teach but this sounds cool

Dive Deeper (module 1), is open to all who yearn to create community, learn more about the physical postures and alignment, are interested in other practices like pranayama and meditation, and who are curious about yoga philosophy and the anatomy of energy.

I have more questions about teacher training! What should I do?

You can attend one of our online info sessions, or talk directly to one of our trainers.  Fiji McAlpine is the lead trainer and is happy to answer any questions you may have!  Email her directly at: fijimcalpine@hotmail.com

What are the training requirements to successfully graduate?
  • To become a certified yoga instructor with Yoga Alliance you must complete all in person and online hours.  All course work and readings must be completed and fees paid by the graduation date.  You must also complete a teaching practicum project at the end of module 2.
What does a typical day look like?

We start with a grounding practice and an asana practice. We then dive into asana labs, breaking down the postures, anatomy or philosophy. We break for a snack, then return for a few more hours of learning. We end with time for integration and meditation.

What is included in my Yoga Teacher Training?

The program tuition includes access to an exceptional local faculty, digital or printed training materials including an extensive manual, an unlimited membership to one of the studios for the duration of the module, YTT discounts on merchandise. Books are sold separately.

What makes this a hybrid training?

The program includes a combination of in-person, live online and pre-recorded video content.

Are there any information sessions I can attend?

A Virtual info Session has been filmed LIVE and stored on the @labstudios.ca Instagram page + more information reels will be posted every week or so up until the training using this platform.

What happens if I cannot attend all the in-person training hours?
  • In order to complete the training and receive a Yoga Alliance certification you must attend all sessions and complete all coursework. Attendance is mandatory.
  • There may be unavoidable circumstances where you’re unable to attend. In these situations, (in accordance to Yoga alliance strict rules) you must  make up ALL missed hours to complete the training by hiring an instructor for private tutoring.
What is the minimum age to attend this training?

The minimum age to attend the training is 17 years old. You must have a legal guardian’s permission to attend if you have not reached the age of majority.

What is your refund policy:
  •  Lab cancels the program for any reason, you will receive a full refund.

  • 1 month before training starts and once the training begins, there will be no refunds.
  • You must withdraw in writing.
What experience do I need to take teacher training?

We welcome students of all levels to our teacher training. For Module 1: Dive Deeper we welcome all curious practitioners! Module 2: Students should have a general level of experience with asana (the physical practice of yoga).

Do you offer financial assistance?

Do you issue tuition income tax receipts?

No, The Lab will not  be able to issue a T2202a tax receipt for the 200hr training.

Can I teach yoga after completing The Lab Method Foundations Training?

Yes, students who complete our 200-hour program will exceed the Yoga Alliance’s requirements to enroll as a RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher). We encourage our graduates to gain some practical teaching experience by sharing yoga with friends, family and co-workers even if they intend to continue their studies with our 300-hour yoga teacher training.

How does the LAB Method compare to other 200-hour training programs?
  • The LAB Method expands on the 200-hour Yoga Alliance requirements with an additional 20 hours of learning and development in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion and ayurveda.
  • Heated and non-heated yoga training
  • Hatha set sequence and Vinyasa training
  • Hybrid format includes in-person, live online and asynchronous learning experiences such as reading, practice, and practical assignments. These elements come together to create a truly deep dive into a vast subject area.
  • We have assembled an exceptional faculty consisting of local and international industry leaders
How much time should I expect to spend on homework?

You should put aside two to three hours each week to review video content and to make your way through the course readings. You should also expect the time you spend on the mat each week to increase as personal practice is the fertile ground from which your teaching will grow.

What if I want to teach at YogaLab?

In this program you will be paired with a The Lab teacher who will mentor you as you: (1) assist their classes and (2) offer practical feedback after you deliver you Community Class. Feedback

If I have arrived at the studio and have questions about a policy before or after class, who do I talk to?

Students are welcome to pass along feedback to a staff member when they are in the studio. If a staff member isn’t available, please send an email so we can connect with you. Our teachers are responsible to support the overall needs of many individuals before and after class.  It is not their job responsibility to work through individual concerns but to pass them along to the leadership team for follow up.

What if I feel concerned with the protocols being followed during class?

We value your experience, if you are having a negative experience during class it is difficult for us to resolve it in the moment.  We do encourage students if they feel uncomfortable with how things are proceeding to leave the class, and follow up with the studio afterwards.

I just had a concerning experience in the studio, who do I reach out to?

You can reach out directly to VIC – director@labvictoria.ca | WEST  – director@labwestshore.ca for any experiences in the studio that fall short of our commitments to you. It is deeply important to each of us to create a sustainable business model and keep our community healthy and safe.  We are committed to working through every single concern.

Safety Measures

Do I have to wear a mask during practice?

Masks are optional in all common areas and are optional for practice.

When are teachers, ambassadors or staff required to wear their masks?

Following the public health orders, wearing masks throughout the studio is optional for all teachers, students and ambassadors.

How do you determine your policies around contact tracing?

Contact tracing is the responsibility of Island Health, not LAB Studios. We have created systems that support clear contact tracing: pre-registration for classes and no student crossover between classes are two of these systems.

What are your cleaning protocols?

Classes are scheduled to allow for ample time in between to clean and sanitize the practice room, washrooms and other high touch areas (such as door handles, countertops, credit/debit machines) in the studio.

Several hand sanitizing stations have been installed throughout the facility, and all persons must sanitize their hands upon entering and exiting the studio.

We continue to use Oxivir Plus Disinfectant Cleaner Concentrate as our primary cleaning solution. It is a tuberculocidal, virucidal, bactericidal, fungicidal, broad-spectrum sanitizer. This product is hydrogen-peroxide based, EcoLogo certified and developed for use in medical and healthcare establishments. We follow the manufacturer’s recommended dilution ratios for both disinfection and broad-spectrum sanitization.

How does physical distancing look in the studio?

We’ve placed rows to indicate mat placement , making it easy to move through the space while upholding physical distancing. Read about our studio etiquette, which includes physical distancing practices.

Only one person is to be on the staircase/hallways at a time, please provide the right-of-way to the person who is on the landing.

How is the LAB staying up to date on current developments?

LAB Leadership team is committed to ensuring the studio is operating in cooperation and in compliance with the directives of the Provincial Health Officer. We maintain regular communication with our Environmental Health Officer who has been supportive of our protocols.
